One-Stage Breast Implant Reconstruction

About the procedure

One-stage direct to implant breast reconstruction is an option for Los Angeles women after undergoing mastectomy for breast cancer. Either saline or silicone implants can be used during one-stage breast implant reconstruction, and this decision will be made after discussion with Dr. Hirsch at the time of the consultation. Occasionally, Dr. Hirsch will recommend using a special type of saline implant that has a removeable port, which allows additional volume to be placed into the implant after the surgery. This port can be removed in a minor procedure in the office. One-stage breast implant reconstruction is an especially good option for women who are undergoing a nipple-sparing mastectomy.

During this procedure, Dr. Hirsch will create a space under the pectoralis muscle into which he will place an implant. Because the space under the pectoralis muscle is tight, he may use a special type of material to expand the size of this space and create a natural shape of the breast. Excellent results can be achieved with one-stage breast implant reconstruction, although occasionally a touch-up procedure is necessary. As with all implant-based breast reconstruction procedures, there is a chance that additional procedures will be necessary several years later.

If the one stage direct to implant breast reconstruction is done at the same time as the mastectomy, patients will often stay for one night in the hospital although they will occasionally go home the same day of surgery. If the breast reconstruction is done at a later date than the mastectomy, patients will usually be able to go home the same day of surgery. In general, patients do not say that this procedure is very painful and usually say that it feels like they have done a lot of chest exercises, and this feeling can last for 1-2 weeks. It is not uncommon that patients may experience some bruising over the breasts as well.
