BioCorneum Scar Cream and Scar Revision
Scar management for post surgical scars and traumatic scars is important to make sure that scars heal correctly and look their best. The three most important parts of scar management are:
- Scar prevention
- Scar modulation
- Scar revision
Scar Prevention
There is no way to completely prevent a scar from surgery or injury. Once the incision is made, there will be a scar. Careful surgical technique and intra-operative techniques are the best way to help minimize scar formation.
Scar Modulation
Once a scar has formed after surgery or injury, the first few months are critical to help ensure that the scar appearance is minimized. Typically, in the first month, post surgical scars are covered with steri-strips. After they are removed, it’s time to start treating the scars. Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Elliot Hirsch usually recommends microneedling and/or laser scar treatments beginning around 4-6 weeks after surgery.
After the steri strips are removed, protecting scars from the sun with silicone scar strips or silicone scar gel and maintaining a moist wound environment are critical. BioCorneum® Scar Gel is the first and only quick drying silicone gel scar cream with SPF30 sunscreen that is approved by the FDA. This scar cream is an important part of our post-surgery scar care regimen, and we recommend it for most patients who have surgery or injuries in exposed areas such as the face.
Scar Revision
If the scar appearance isn’t light or thin and microneedling and laser scar revision have been performed, a scar revision procedure may be necessary. These can be performed in the office or in the operating room, depending on the size of the scar.
C-Section Scar Revision Surgery
After pregnancy and a C-section, the abdominal wall undergoes changes that can leave excess skin and an uneven scar, often causing irritation and aesthetic concerns. Dr. Hirsch performs C-section scar revision by carefully removing the old scar, contouring the surrounding skin for a smoother appearance, and meticulously suturing the area to ensure symmetry. In some cases, liposuction may be used to further refine the contour. This outpatient procedure typically does not require drains, and recovery is generally smooth with minimal discomfort.
For patients with C-section scars, we also offer specialized C-section scar revision surgery to enhance healing and create a smoother, less noticeable scar.
