Kybella Los Angeles
Kybella, or deoxycholic acid, is a new treatment for patients with fullness under their chin (submental fullness). Kybella is FDA approved to treat fat deposits in this area. Kybella treatments are given through a series of microinjections to the underside of the chin. These are performed in office by Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Elliot Hirsch. The entire process typically takes less than 30 minutes, and the results are permanent with no surgery required!
Before | After |
Two thirds (67%) of people said they are bothered by a double-chin according to a 2015 study conducted by the ASDS (American Society for Dermatologic Surgery). According to the study, submental fullness bothers people just as much as fine lines and wrinkles.
Frequently asked questions about Kybella
How does Kybella work?
Kybella is made from deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. When Kybella is injected, it helps destroy fat cells. These cells are then naturally removed by your body. With this treatment, Dr. Hirsch is able to non-surgically contour the jawline for a younger appearance. The treatment results look natural because the process is similar to what happens with weight loss.
The treatment requires a series of small injections with a very thin needle to the treatment area. The procedure itself generally involves minimal discomfort.
The procedure is suitable for adult men and women ages 19 and up who have fullness in the submental area. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have an active infection in the area, you should not get Kybella.
What are the side effects of Kybella?
The most common side effects of Kybella are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and redness. Rarely, Kybella can cause temporary asymmetries in mouth movement or swallowing sensation changes through its effects on nerves. These are temporary, and usually resolve in a few months.
How many injections of Kybella do I need to have?
Each session of Kybella treatment is a series of 15-25 microinjections. A minimum of two treatment sessions is necessary to achieve optimal results, and 4-6 weeks are typical between sessions. Most patients undergo 2-4 sessions. Each session generally takes 30-45 minutes to complete.
What is the recovery period like after Kybella?
Swelling is very common after Kybella injections. Typically, swelling begins 1-2 days after Kybella injections and is most noticeable 2-4 days after the treatment. Swelling can last 2 weeks after treatment, and is usually gone after 4 weeks. The aesthetic contouring treatment results are noticeable a few weeks after the treatments are complete.
